Matthew C. Ercolani, MD FACS

Dr. Ercolani

Matthew C. Ercolani, M.D. is a fully trained Board-certified urologist.  He is a Fellow of the American Board of Urology and the American College of Surgeons.  He served as the Director of Robotic Surgery at Venice Regional Bayfront Health for 6 years and started the Robotic Surgery Program at Englewood Community Hospital in 2016.  He is the co-chairperson of the Robotics Steering Committee at Blake Medical Center.  He currently holds active privileges at 4 local hospitals in the area. He is also the owner and founder of Elite Robotic Surgical Consultants LLC, a company that provides robotic urology surgical services in underserved areas across the Western United States. Dr. Ercolani is a member of the American Urological Association, American College of Surgeons, Alpha Omega Alpha, Sexual Medicine Society of North America, the Endourological Society, and the Society of Robotic Surgery.  He previously served as a board member for the Sarasota and DeSoto Chapter of the American Cancer Society for 2 years and remains active in that charity.

He has published more than 20 articles and abstracts in the urologic and radiologic literature.  Every year, he attends academic urology meetings around the world to keep his finger on the pulse of the latest advances in urological surgery and patient care and maintain working relationships with the best urologists in America and abroad.He serves as a key opinion leader (“medical expert”) for several large medical device companies:

  • Intuitive Surgical (daVinci™ robotic surgery for kidney, bladder, prostate, and pelvic prolapse)
  • Medtronic (InterStim™ sacral nerve modulation therapy),
  • Boston Scientific (GreenLight XPS™ laser vaporization of the prostate for BPH)
  • Teleflex Medical/Neotract (Urolift™ treatment for BPH)
  • Uromedica (ProACT™ treatment for male urinary incontinence)
  • Auris Health (Monarch™ robotic platform)

Dr. Ercolani teaches surgeons from around the globe the techniques of the most cutting edge treatments in Urology.  Around the world, Dr. Ercolani has attended meetings in England, France, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, and China.  In May 2015, he served as a visiting lecturer in South Africa.  In July 2017, he visited China to teach the latest advances in laser vaporization of the prostate for BPH to local urologists in 3 different provinces.

Dr. Ercolani also serves as an early advisor to several medical device and pathology companies developing new advances for urologic treatments and has created several investment vehicles to participate in the research, development, and commercialization of these novel disruptive technologies.

Although teaching is an important part of his practice, Dr. Ercolani’s goal is always to provide state-of-the-art, compassionate, and high-quality care to as many patients as possible in the Gulf Coast community.  Over the past 9 years of living in Gulf Coast Florida, Dr. Ercolani has slowly grown his practice and now works as far North as Bradenton (Blake Medical Center), as far east as Arcadia (Desoto Memorial Hospital), and as far south as Englewood (Englewood Community Hospital).

Dr. Ercolani received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1996.  He then received his Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences from New York University in 1999 and completed his Doctorate in Medicine at the State University of New York – Downstate College of Medicine in 2004.

After finishing medical school, he moved on to his specialty training at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  He completed his preliminary studies in General Surgery in 2006, followed by his Urology residency in 2010.  He then went to Europe for his Fellowship in Laparoscopic and Robotic Urology at the Department of Urology at the Institute Mutualiste Montsouris (IMM), completing his studies in early 2011 and subsequently returning to the United States to join RTR Urology in April 2011 as its newest partner.  He stayed at RTR Urology for almost 6 years starting his own practice.

The son of esteemed kidney specialist Dr. Louis Ercolani of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, Dr. Ercolani was born in New York City and grew up in Michigan before returning to the metropolitan New York area for his medical training.  After studying in Paris, France at the IMM (one of the premier laparoscopic training centers for Urology in the world and birthplace of laparoscopic surgery for prostate cancer), he and his wife, Jennifer, moved to Venice to begin their life together in the beautiful Gulf Coast Florida.  The Ercolani’s are life-long lovers of outdoor activities, the sun, and the sea.  They are also cooking and wine enthusiasts and avid travelers.  Dr. Ercolani’s wife Jennifer is a celebrated professional photographer who has traveled the world, had her work published in several magazines and online publications, and won Planet Magazine’s Global Travel Photo Contest in 2011.   She has her own photography company, LifeStepsPhoto, which specializes in wedding, family, and events photography and provides services to the Gulf Coast Florida community.  Jennifer and Matt have a 4-year-old daughter, Siena, and look forward to watching her grow up in this wonderful community for years to come.
